What to Expect - Prospective Racers

The following information is provided to assist prospective racers with planning for participation in the 2024 race.


Registered racers will be added to an email distribution list and will receive regular updates regarding the event in the weeks leading up to the race. Registered racers will also be provided access to the private racer webpage that includes all the logistical details and answers to racer Frequently Asked Questions.  A few days before the race, racers will find out which qualifying heat they will be competing in during the event. The best racers from the 2 qualifying heats will go on the compete in the Championship Race. See below for more details on what to expect for the weekend.

Friday before Race Day

 

Racers are invited to an optional social evening event Friday evening to meet and mingle with other racers. Weather permitting, racers may also choose to join in a short group penny farthing (high wheel) ride.  Registered racers will receive more details regarding the social event in July.

 

RACE DAY

 

PRE-RACE MEETING: The day will start out with a mandatory pre-race meeting for all racers. During this meeting, racers will receive their race packet/numbers and all the information they need to participate in the event. There will be an opportunity for racers to ask any questions. Racers must attend this meeting to participate in the race.

 

PRE-RACE LAPS: About an hour before the event begins, the race course will be closed to traffic and racers will have the opportunity to ride/preview the the race course.

 

QUALIFYING HEATS: The field of racers will be split into two qualifying heats, which will be 20 minutes each. The best 50% of racers from each of the qualifying heats will go on to compete in the final championship race. More info about the race can be found here.

 

INTERMISSION: Between the qualifying heats and the championship race,  there will be an intermission event that provides the racers with a rest period before the championship race. Those racers who qualify for the final race will be notified during this time period.

 

CHAMPIONSHIP RACE: The final race will be a 30-minute criterium race. Immediately following the race, there will be an awards ceremony to recognize all racers and the winners. In addition to recognizing the champion of the 2024 National Clustered Spires High Wheel Race, the top three overall racers and top three of male and female categories will also be recognized. 

 

POST RACE EVENT: Our title sponsor Brewer's Alley Restaurant will provide a celebratory dinner for registered racers immediately following the event.
